You don't need to know every piece of hat-making terminology before ordering a hat. This guide will help you understand sizing, fit, crowns and brims before we talk.
A good hat starts with a good fit. Measure your head where the hat will naturally sit, then use the chart below as a starting point.
If you're ordering a custom Sugar Creek hat, we'll talk through sizing and fit with you before we build it.
| Letter | Hat Size | Head (in.) | Head (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 6⅜ – 6½ | 20 – 20½" | 51 – 52 |
| S | 6⅝ – 6¾ | 21 – 21⅜" | 53 – 54 |
| M | 6⅞ – 7 | 21¾ – 22⅛" | 55 – 56 |
| L | 7⅛ – 7¼ | 22½ – 22⅞" | 57 – 58 |
| XL | 7⅜ – 7½ | 23¼ – 23⅝" | 59 – 60 |
| XXL | 7⅝ – 7¾ | 24 – 24⅜" | 61 – 62 |
Two people can have the same head circumference and still need a different fit. Head shape describes the relationship between the front-to-back and side-to-side dimensions of your head.
An oval head has more front-to-back length than width and falls near the middle of common hat-fit proportions.
A rounder head has less difference between its front-to-back and side-to-side measurements.
A long oval head has noticeably more front-to-back length relative to its width and may need a more elongated fit.
Circumference gets us close. Head shape helps us refine how the hat actually sits and feels once it's on your head.
That's fine. Custom orders start with a conversation. We'll walk through fit with you before your hat is made.
Crown, brim and brim front work together to give a hat its personality. You can start with a shape you already know or simply show us a hat you like and we'll talk through it.
Use this as a starting point. Crown, brim and finishing details can be combined to create a hat that feels like your own.
Both have a place. The right choice depends largely on weather, use and the kind of hat you want to wear.
Felt is heavier and warmer and is built to hold a crisp shape through cooler weather. It's the traditional choice for fall and winter and is the foundation of Sugar Creek's custom felt hats.
Straw breathes and is a natural choice for spring and summer heat, rodeos and long days outside. Plenty of hat wearers keep both felt and straw hats and change with the season.
Leather sweatbands can shrink if a hat is exposed to excessive heat. A hot vehicle, dashboard or direct heat source can change the fit of a hat.
Keep your hat away from excessive heat and store it in a way that protects the brim and crown when it isn't being worn.
You don't need to walk in knowing a crown name, brim style or exact hat size. Tell us what you like, send us a photo, or describe what you're after. We'll work through the rest together.
